charmingly pretentious vices

  • THE BACKSTORY

I’ve blogged since I was 14 and wisevices is the latest, (hopefully) most relevant incarnation. You would think that we would be done angst-ing and swooning and generally being foolish after the teenage years but as it turns out, our 20s aren’t exactly the most wisdomous times of your life either. THANK GOD FOR THAT. So I continue to rave and rant about school, fashion, the world, current affairs, poetry, fiction, travelling, and how much I hate cats - good times (:

I graduated from UC Berkeley and call Mumbai, Singapore and the Bay Area home.

Arziyan – Dilli 6

Posted by Vaishnavi on July 9, 2009

This total fan-girling is about 4 months too late, but I had a dream about this song last night (and of Aaja Nachle’s Show Me Your Jalwa. Just in case anyone’s doubting the FOB credentials) and remembered I had meant to make a post about this ages ago.

It’s either a purely divine gift or tremendous pity that the Dilli 6 soundtrack came out around the same time as Slumdog Millionaire. On the one hand, suddenly we were surrounded by stunning compositions and lyrics, but on the other, too much of a good thing makes it hard to give each song the full adoration it deserves. So between being besotted with Jai Ho, Ringa Ringa and Paper Planes, I completely forgot how wonderful the Dilli 6 music was. Masakkali, Rehna Tu, and most importantly, Arziyan. I don’t think you need to be Indian to be captivated by Rahman’s hypnotic score and Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics. Every time I listen to this song, I want to get down on my knees and hold my hands up in humility; how do mortal men create works that can humble thousands of people? It’s truly magical.

You can find an excellent translation at Opal Odyssey – I trawled the Net for a translation that would capture the spirit of the song and this one struck an instant chord. Just beautiful.

yes, absolutely, – i wrote a review of the whole soundtrack and this was one of my favourites. it actually goes on for 8 minutes or so but honestly you don’t even notice that. the whole of dilli 6 is pretty brilliant.
